Top Tips for Self-Published Authors
By Lindsay Woodward
I’ve spent more than a decade now not only building my own career as an indie author, but also helping other writers navigate the world of self-publishing. I’ve done this through mentoring and, more recently, my new self-publishing support platform, Lindie.
Along the way, I’ve seen what truly sets successful self-published authors apart. It’s about far more than just writing a great book. So, if you’re looking to boost your self-publishing journey, then here are all my top tips.
1. Adopt a Business Brain
If you're serious about making your books sell, then you need to put on more than your creative hat. When you’re self-published, you’re not just an author. You're also the publisher, marketer and project manager. This means setting deadlines, planning budgets, investing in professional support and creating marketing strategies. The moment you treat your author journey like a business, everything ramps up.
2. Know Your Readers
Understanding who you're writing for helps everything click into place. The most successful self-published authors know exactly what their audience wants, and they tailor their work accordingly. Writing with purpose doesn’t mean selling out. It means connecting better.
3. Keep Learning
Publishing isn’t static. Algorithms change, reader trends evolve and technology updates. Staying informed is essential. While you need to keep reading fiction, you also need to read blogs, newsletters and industry guides to help you stay on top of all you need to know. Invest in courses if you can. The most resilient authors are perpetual students.
4. Market Smart, Not Just Hard
You don’t need a massive budget to make an impact, but you do need a plan. Whether it’s building your email list, optimising your Amazon presence, or experimenting with ads, smart marketing gives your book a fighting chance. And remember: you’re not selling to everyone. You’re reaching your readers.
5. Show Up Consistently
Success rarely comes overnight. It’s built one book and one reader at a time. The authors who break through are usually the ones who keep showing up, even when sales are slow and when doubt creeps in. Publishing is a long game. Play it with patience.
